TAXUS BACCATA
Old English Yew tree seeds
10 SEEDS
If you google online TAXUS BACCATA, OLDEST TREE in Scotland
you may find a picture of the still alive FORTIGALL YEW in Scotland Perthshire. It is between 2000 and 3000 years old. There are many very very old trees, one up to 5000 years old. in Wales.
These make fabulous hedges providing colour in winter, or can just be a good yew tree.
It requires patience to germinate but worth the effort and valuable. Easy to do but takes a long time. Deeply dormant.
Instructions come with the seeds.
Hardiness Zones: 6 to 7 and frost tender.
Height: 45 ft
Spread: 20 ft Form: rounded
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches
Fruit: red
It is in leaf all year, in flower from March to April, and the seeds ripen from September to November. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Wind. The plant is not self-fertile. It is noted for attracting wildlife.
The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very acid and very alkaline soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
Needs long stratification. Easy with patience. These ARE poisonous so do not eat the seeds and wash hands after holding berries. I pick the seeds all the time and have never been ill but it is best to be sure.
Please note that all returns must be sent the next day after receiving the seeds as under the Perishable Goods Act, seeds can perish unless kept in the right conditions.
